4 Tips for Getting the Most Out of Memm

posted by Kevin Jubbal, M.D.

Welcome to Memm! In this brief guide, we’ll cover 4 tips in how to make the most of Memm, so you can effectively and efficiently memorize content for the MCAT.

1 | Set Your Schedule

Why it matters

Before diving in, we need to structure your studying with a proper schedule. You’ll first need a target test date. If you don’t have one locked in, that’s fine. We recommend choosing a test date on the earlier end of what you are expecting.

How to manage your schedule

We recommend mirroring your Memm schedule as closely as possible to your content review schedule. On the signup page, you can drag and drop your schedule. Don’t worry, you can always fine tune it later.

2 | Optimized Study Flow for Learning

Why it matters

We want you to get the most out of Memm so you can crush your MCAT on test day. By following the study flow in Memm as it’s designed, you’ll receive the maximal benefit.

Following the Learn Flow

When you first log in, you’ll see your Dashboard, which looks like this:

Start with Learn, which is where you’ll be introduced to new content in the form of Sheets. Sheets consist of high yield information in a condensed and organized format. At this point, focus on comprehension and building your mental scaffolding. Toggle key facts to test yourself and incorporate active recall.

After reviewing Sheets, you’ll be introduced to the Cards relevant to the content you just studied in Sheets. Grade the difficulty of each card using the three buttons under each card. If you get the card wrong, select “Again”. If you got the card correct but it was difficult, select “Good”. If you got the card correct easily, select “Easy”.

3 | Optimized Study Flow for Reviewing

Why it matters

After focusing on learning and comprehension in the Learn Flow, it’s critical to commit key facts to memory through the Review Flow.

Following the Review Flow

From the Dashboard, click Review to review Cards that are due. These are cards you have already studied under Learn. This is the spaced repetition aspect of memory consolidation.

Alternatively, if you’d like to review a Sheet you’ve previously seen, search for the topic in the Sheets search bar. We recommend using this when needing to brush up or clarify information between traditional Learn and Review sessions.

4 | Consistency is King

Why it matters

It’s hard to argue with the scientific evidence – consistent studying is far more effective than cram sessions or occasional bursts. To fully take advantage of spaced repetition and active recall, it’s important to use Memm daily, or as close to daily as is reasonable for you.

How to Practice Consistency

Log in daily and follow the Learn and Review Flows. You should strive to complete what is due under Learn and Review every day.

If you miss a day, don’t fret. Memm allows you the flexibility to proceed through Learn at your own pace. However, avoid missing multiple days in a row, particularly in Review, as the review burden can get out of hand.

By following these four tips, you’ll be well on your way to learning MCAT content quickly and efficiently!
